UFC Fight Night 22 September 15th, 2010

UFC Fight Night 22 Live from Austin, Texas. September 15th, 2010Two contenders in line to challenge Anderson SIlva for the belt are fighting tonight; Nate Marquardt and Rousimar Palhares. The rematch between Sonnen and Silva is scheduled to happen in January of 2011 with no exact confirmed date.I love watching Fight Night, not only because it's free, but it highlights fighters that aren't often shown on the main card of UFC events. It gives you a look into the talent and skills of up and comers or fighters that are earning their shot at the title, like tonight's fights. Since I don't really know most of these fighters, I don't have a lot of opinions or favourites. One downfall of Fight Night is because it's live they have to show a lot more commercials. This is usually between the rounds. I like hearing what each fighters corner has to say so you can see how the fighter adjusts their style and approach. This is what went down.

Ross Pearson vs. Cole Miller - Lightweight Division
Ross Pearson winner of Ultimate Fighter season 9.
Miller lands a couple big hits one after another knocking Pearson to the ground, jumps on top with the rear naked choke. Ref calls the fight and Miller wins by submission in the 2nd round.

Jim Miller vs. Gleison Tibau - Lightweight Division
Miller's brother, Dan Miller is also in the UFC in the middleweight division.
Both on winning streaks. Pretty even fight, both fighters got takedowns, were close to submissions, and threw some big punches. Miller wins by unanimous decision.

Efrain Escudero vs. Charles Oliveira - Lightweight Division
Escudero winner of Ultimate Fighter season 8.
Oliveira seems to be pushing the pace of the fight but Escudero shows great takedown defence. Oliveira starts to clown a bit near the end of the second round. "Hey hey get your hand out of there its a family show" Joe Rogan on Oliveira adjusting himself after taking a shot to the gonads haha! He's always a big part of the entertainment. Right after that Oliveira lands a huge takedown then gets the standing rear naked choke. Oliveira wins by submission in the 3rd round.

Nate Marquardt vs. Rousimar Palhares - Middleweight DivisionI really like watching Nate Marquardt fight. He trains with GSP so of course I cheer for him. His record is 32-9-2! MC Hammer agrees with me, he was wearing Marquardt's t-shirt to the fight! The first round starts off a little slow, both fighters feeling each other out, not throwing too many punches. The fighters end up on the mat, Marquardt gets close to an armless triangle. Soon after Palhares grabs Marquardt's leg to go for a submission but Marquardt slips out. Palhares looks to the ref while pointing at Marquardt's leg trying to say he's greased up, while he's doing that, boom, Marquardt takes advantage, jumps on top and lands multiple punches right to Palhares face. He took perfect advantage of Palhares moment of hesitation. Marquardt wins by TKO in the first round. WOHOO!!!

After the fight Palhares goes up to Marquardt and again tries to check his leg. Joe Rogan announces afterwards, the ref, the doctor, everyone checks and there was no sort of grease or vaseline at all. No controversy, clean fight. Interesting that one of his training partners, GSP was accused of greasing up before a fight as well. Those guys are just sweaty and the opponents have sour grapes. Palhares was 20-2 before this.

During the fights they annouce "Brocktober". Sweet... Such a big fight they'll be showing a 3 part primetime series like they did most recently for the Evans/Rampage fight. I love when they do this but I really hope Lesnar doesn't piss me off. I'll get into why exactly he annoys me when I talk about UFC 121 he will headline, for now just know I haven't enjoyed his attitude in the past.

Obviously I am a few days late in posting this and recent events regarding Chael Sonnen's rematch against Silva have occurred. Sonnen tested positive for PEDs after their fight at UFC 117 in August 2010. This could mean that Marquardt is higher up in his shot at Silva, personally I think he needs to win one more fight first, but we'll see
