Upcoming UFC Fight for the Troops 2 (Fight Night 23)

UFC Fight for the Troops 2 January 22, 2011 from Fort Hood Texas

I love the free fights on spike! Sometimes the free fights don't have the greatest cards but this one should be awesome. None of my favorites are fighting but definitely some interesting guys I like to watch. There are two heavyweight fights on this card. After the recent announcement of having two of the top heavyweight guys coaching the next season it's good to see they're still showcasing the other the division. There are a few fights that I really want to see that during the weigh-ins weren't part of the live broadcast card but I'm hoping I can catch the free prelims.

This first fight I want to see is Cody "one trick guillotine pony" McKenzie from the 12th season of TUF vs. Yves Edwards. Edwards came out to the weigh in stage with a bag of BBQ potato chips, really? And if you read my blogs following TUF you know my feelings on McKenzie. Both guys are just a little goofy and I'd like to see a double knockout. Very unlikely but I want to see both guys get taken out.

The second fight that I'm hoping to catch on the prelims is the opposite situation, I like both guys! I don't think I have seen them fight before but when they came out to the weigh ins they were both really cool, acting respectful for each other and posed like two frat boys for their face off picture. That fight is DaMarques Johnson vs. Mike "The Joker" Guymon. I'd like to see the Joker pull of this win, he really does have a smile like the joker, he's great!

Cole Miller vs. Matt Wiman - lightweight
I'm not super pumped about this fight. Both fighters have pretty impressive records 17-4 and 12-5 respectively but I haven't seen them fight a lot. I'm going with Miller on this one just because he has finished more of his fights, either by submission, KO or TKO and he does have a bit of a height advantage. Who knows, maybe they'll come out swinging and pull off a fight of the night, but its not something I'm going to hold my breath for.

Joey "The Mexicutioner" Beltran vs. Pat Barry - heavyweight
The first of the two heavyweight fights on the card. I don't know why but there is just something about Barry that I don't like. It may be that he trains with Lesnar, but there is just something about his cocky attitude that I don't like. Plus I really like Beltran so it makes this one an easy decision. Beltran won three of his four fights in 2010, two by TKO. The only fight he didn't win was decision loss to Matt Mitrione (also on this card). I'm hoping for another TKO victory for Beltran but I don't think Barry will be someone he can easily walk though. This will definitely be a great fight to watch.

Mark Hominik vs. George Roop - featherweight
Since I don't know many of the featherweights I definitely don't know these guys but I'm rooting my the Canadian, Hominik! Plus the other guy's last name is Roop... weird.

Matt "Meathead" Mitrione vs. Tim Hague - heavyweight
Meathead was on the heavyweight season of TUF (10) and on the show he was a total weirdo. Since his unanimous decision win over Joey Beltran (also on this card) at UFC 119 I have become a fan of his. He's still a bit of a weirdo but definitely has great sportsmanship which is something I definitely respect. Tim Hague is Canadian and as a canuck myself I would usually cheer for him but I am still going to root for meathead. Tim Hague has defeated big heavyweight Pat Barry (fighting Beltran on this card) but lost to Beltran since that time. I always say in this sport you can't judge a fighters chances against their opponents wins or loses but the heavyweight division I feel has so few guys at the top its hard not to look at that. Whether meathead takes it or Hague shows up with his A game I don't see this fight going the distance and I see fight of the night potential.

Melvin Guillard vs. Evan Dunham - lightweight
This was a tough decision, both of these guys fought last time at UFC 119. Guillard pulled off a split decision over Jeremy Stevens and also won his other two fights in 2010. Dunham lost (his first professional loss) to Sean Sherk. I completely disagreed with that decision. He got a brutal cut in the first round, and I mean BRUTAL but kept attacking, attempting a guillotine a bunch of times. But anyone who has seen Sean Sherk knows his neck is kinda huge so thats probably not the best submission to attempt. In any case, both fighters are really exciting to watch and I'm definitely looking forward to this fight. I'm going to go with Guillard on this one but as long as its a good battle I'll be happy if either fighter wins.
